Winter Skirts and Boots: What to Wear with Every Length

Four women walk along a snowy brownstone street in mid-calf skirts with tall boots or ankle boots over opaque tights, showing different ways to pair winter skirts with boots.

If you wear skirts every day, winter isn't something to wait out. With the right boot and a warm layer underneath, a skirt can be just as practical as anything else in your closet. The secret is matching the boot to your hem, so there's no cold, exposed gap in between.

Boots with skirts are also everywhere this season. Who What Wear rounded up skirt-and-boot pairings "to copy this winter," and Vogue Arabia called boots with a midi skirt "the season's winning duo." Both stories also show miniskirts. Our guide sticks to knee-length and longer skirts, worn without a gap.

Winter practicalities first

Keep the gap covered and warm

The coldest spot in a skirt outfit is the space between the hem and the top of the boot. Pick one of these:

  • Boots that overlap the hem. When you're standing and when you're sitting, the boot top should reach the hem or go under it.
  • Opaque tights. Thicker tights are warmer. Match them to your boots or skirt so the outfit doesn't break into sections, and any gap that shows is covered.
  • Leggings under the skirt. Ordinary full-length leggings, or fleece-lined ones on very cold days, add warmth that nobody sees. They work best under mid-calf and ankle-length skirts.

Wet hems

Long skirts soak up slush and rain. On wet days, choose a hem that clears the ground when you walk, a smooth fabric that dries quickly, or tall boots with a mid-calf skirt. Keep an umbrella and a towel by the door, and let wet hems dry flat or hanging rather than bunched up.

Static cling

Dry indoor heat makes skirts cling to tights and leggings. A slip between the skirt and your legwear helps the most. A light mist of water or anti-static spray, or a dryer sheet rubbed over your tights, usually fixes it for the day.

Coat length

A coat that ends clearly above or clearly below the skirt hem looks deliberate. A coat that ends at the same point as the skirt can look cut off. Guidelines:

  • Knee-length skirts: a hip-length jacket or a knee-length coat.
  • Skirts just below the knee and mid-calf skirts: a coat that reaches the knee or a little below it, or one that's clearly longer than the skirt.
  • Ankle-length skirts: a short jacket or a long coat. Avoid coats that end at mid-calf.

About warmth

No fabric is automatically warm. A thin knit can be cooler than a woven skirt. Warmth depends on how thick and dense the fabric is, what fiber it's made from (wool is warmer than most cotton or synthetic blends), whether it's lined, and what you wear underneath. On really cold days, tights or leggings under a skirt make a bigger difference than the skirt itself.

A note on skirt lengths

"Midi" is a broad term. Stores and magazines use it for anything from just below the knee to just above the ankle. To keep things clear, this guide uses four specific lengths:

  • Knee-length: the hem hits at or just over the knee.
  • Just below the knee: the hem is a few inches under the knee, at the top of the calf.
  • Mid-calf: the hem is at the widest part of the calf or a bit lower.
  • Ankle-length (maxi): the hem is at or near the ankle.

Vogue Arabia describes the midi as "below the knee and above the ankle, roughly at calf height." That covers the middle two lengths.

Which boot goes with which length

Knee-length skirts

Best: knee-high or tall riding boots that reach the hem or go under it. Also good: ankle boots with opaque tights.

A straight knee-length skirt like our Cotton Spandex Stretch Knee-Length Pencil Skirt (plus size) works well with a tall boot, because nothing gets caught at the knee. A fuller shape like the Knee Length A-Line Skater Skirt with Full Elastic Waist looks good with a slim knee-high boot and tights.

Skirts just below the knee

Best: tall boots that go up under the hem, so there's no gap when you sit. Also good: slim sock boots or ankle boots with opaque tights in the same color as the boots, so your leg looks like one line. This is the pleated-skirt-and-sock-boot look that Who What Wear calls "a proportional dream."

Fuller and A-line skirts at this length have room for a slightly wider boot shaft.

Mid-calf skirts

Best: tall boots whose tops go up under the hem. Also good: ankle boots with opaque tights, or leggings.

Be careful with boots that end at mid-calf. Their tops often fall just under a mid-calf hem, which leaves a band of exposed leg, especially when you sit or walk. Choose a boot tall enough to overlap the hem, or wear opaque tights so any gap is covered.

Our Mid-Calf Pencil Skirt in Cotton Spandex – No Slits (plus size) has no slit, so your boots stay covered when you walk.

Ankle-length skirts

Best: ankle boots, lug-sole boots or any flat boot you can walk in comfortably. The skirt covers the boot shaft, so warmth and grip matter more than how the boot looks.

The Stretch Maxi Pencil Skirt – Cotton Blend, No Slits (plus size) is a clean line over boots. Leggings or tall boots underneath add warmth you can't see.

Tops and layers for skirt outfits

Simple layering ideas we still love

These ideas are from the original version of this article:

  • A cropped jacket over long layers. Wear a cropped puffer or denim jacket over a long cardigan or tunic, with a knee-length or below-the-knee skirt.
  • Color blocking. Wear two or three complementary colors in your layers. Bright colors work even with black.
  • A scarf as a poncho. Drape a large wool scarf over your shoulders and secure it with a brooch or belt.
  • Shirts and sweaters. Wear a long-sleeve shell under a button-down shirt and finish with a knit vest or sweater.

Try your outfit before you need it. Walk around in the boots, sit down in the skirt and check for a gap.

FAQ

What boots go with a mid-calf skirt? Tall boots that go up under the hem, or ankle boots with opaque tights. Avoid boots that end just below the hem and leave a gap.

How do I stay warm in a skirt in winter? Wear opaque tights or leggings under the skirt, choose a lined or thicker skirt, and wear boots that close the gap at the hem.

Can I wear leggings under a long skirt? Yes. Ordinary full-length leggings under a mid-calf or ankle-length skirt add warmth without showing.

How do I stop my skirt from sticking to my tights? Wear a slip, or use anti-static spray or a dryer sheet on your tights.

What coat length works with a long skirt? A short jacket or a long coat that's clearly longer than the skirt. Avoid coats that end at the same point as the hem.
